Shopify has been gradually introducing their Extensibility checkout format to replace the previous checkout.liquid method of customising their payment forms. Checkout.liquid will be officially deprecated in August 2025 meaning that Extensibility will be the only way to introduce any element of customisation into Shopify stores. It also means that a lot of third party tracking and javascript custom functionality will no longer be available, so store owners need to look elsewhere if they want to get insight into user checkout behaviour.
Shopify’s Checkout Extensibility is the platform’s new framework for customising the checkout experience, replacing the legacy checkout.liquid system. Originally designed for Shopify Plus merchants, it introduces a structured approach using Checkout UI Extensions, Shopify Functions, and the Branding API instead of direct code modifications.
The shift to Checkout Extensibility was driven by security, performance, and long-term maintainability. Unlike checkout.liquid, which allowed unrestricted JavaScript and HTML edits, this system operates within Shopify’s controlled environment, ensuring stability across platform updates. However, this also means that deep checkout customisations such as multi-step flows or dynamic UI changes are more restricted and must be implemented through Shopify’s approved methods.
The removal of checkout.liquid means that options for understanding behaviour on Shopify checkouts have been decimated. Previously reliable tools that could have been installed via liquid or a google tag manager integration no longer work.
For example, the ability of UX tracking tool Mouseflow to do anything on the checkout has been completely removed, as they acknowledge here:
Even big names like Hotjar have been affected - they can’t give you any insight on checkouts any more:
The good news is that you can still get insights on Shopify checkout behaviour that will help you improve conversion rates. Zuko has been working with Shopify to develop an approved app that is simple to install and will give you meaningful tracking data immediately.
The app is listed within the Shopify store and you can read full instructions on how to install it in the Zuko guide.
The Zuko app gives you valuable information on how people are behaving on your checkout and will shed light on why they are abandoning the journey rather than completing their purchase.
Zuko form analytics was designed to deliver the most in-depth insight into online forms & checkouts so you run deep analysis if you want to, but to give you an idea of the power, we’ve summarised some of the topline reports here:
