Is Zuko an alternative to Google Analytics for form tracking? Yes and no.
Google Analytics is the most widely used web analytics platform out there and what's more, it’s free! Whilst it hasn’t specifically been built to track forms you can hack it to get some basic form optimization metrics.
So how do we compare Zuko and Google Analytics? The truth is that there shouldn’t be much of a quandary. Zuko has been built to specifically extract and share behavioural insights for form users. It gives much deeper insights that you can get quickly. GA is great but requires a lot of (expensive!) developer time to be able to track forms with any level of detail.
We would never suggest that people stopped using Google Analytics. It’s a great product but if forms are important to your business, it is a false economy to not use the tool that has been specially designed to improve their conversion rate.
For comparison, this table shows the form tracking capabilities of Google Analytics compared to Zuko:
There is a tonne of functionality that Google Analytics delivers that Zuko will never be able to. It provides measurement and behavioural tracking across the whole of your website with flexibility on how that data is displayed. That said, Zuko has been designed to be the number one form analytics tool so it easily outcompetes Google in that arena.
The siren call for GA for many companies is that it is “free”. There is no pricing so it is an easy and cheap way to get the insight you need on your website. When you start to factor in set up time, however, the calculator changes. Google Analytics requires a lot of work and tagging to be able to track form metrics and the developers needed to do this are not cheap.
Zuko has been designed to be simple to set up - you can start tracking forms in minutes - and does not require a developer. The development costs needed to set up GA soon begin to dwarf the modest subscription fees (from $70 per month) that you can pay to access Zuko.
"Building this in Google Analytics assumes you have the developer time to do the coding. It will never be quite right, so expect it WILL take longer than you estimate and you'll need at least a couple of iterations. You'll also need to work out a decent event taxonomy and grammar structure, so you can actually read and analyse the data later on.
Then you need to create a series of calculated metrics using the event structure you've made and several custom or automated reports, so you can understand it all. It's an awful lot of work and almost nobody bothers for good reason.
I have only seen one half decent Google Analytics form integration after looking at thousands of sites and analytics setups. There's a reason why. It's a giant pain in the backside to build and maintain. Just install Zuko instead and save yourself the hassle."
